QUEEN SIZE, KING SIZE OR STANDARD BED? HOW TO FIND YOUR IDEAL BED SIZES?

Choosing your bed raises many questions. Beyond the choice of bed frame, box spring and type of mattress, you are first faced with choosing the size of your bed. Many options present themselves and can make this choice difficult.

Just considering the mattress, a range of solutions are already possible: Single or double mattress, or even a combination of two single mattresses. In terms of dimensions, everything is complicated! The bedding market offers a large selection of sizes ranging from standard sizes, to large sizes, to special sizes. Each option may be different between manufacturers and countries. A lexicon specific to mattress sizes has even appeared to define the dimensions: Queen Size and King Size. TEMPUR® helps you clear up the jargon of bedding and guides you in choosing the right bed size for your situation.

BEDDING SIZE GUIDE

A size guide becomes essential for those who want to make the best choice of bedding because on the one hand the range of sizes is dense and constantly growing, and on the other hand it will be necessary to assemble several elements to constitute a bed. Indeed, the size of the bed will depend on the size of the mattress, the size of the box spring and the size of the bedding accessories. Follow the guide to understand the different bed sizes.

BED SIZES

SINGLE BED

With a width of 70 to 90 centimetres and a length of 190 to 200 centimetres, the single bed is the "big bed" that children have access to, often from the age of 3. If it is then suitable until adulthood, adolescents and young adults quickly turn to a 1 and a half place bed or more commonly to a double bed, when space allows it.

SINGLE BED AND A HALF

The 1 and a half place bed is between 100 and 120 centimetres wide. The 1 and a half place bed will be classified in the category of 1 place bed.

The sleeper benefits from more comfort than a traditional single bed without encroaching on the space of the bedroom. It is a compromise between sleeping space and floor space: ideal for people sleeping alone, but who appreciate having space.

DOUBLE BED

With a width of 140 to 200 centimetres and a length between 190 and 200 centimetres, the double bed is suitable for adults or couples, and is the best-selling bedding.

When the size of the bed is chosen, it will be necessary to adapt the size of the mattress, the box spring and the bedding accessories.

MATTRESS SIZES

Historically the supply of bed sizes was limited to two major standards for 1-person and 2-person mattresses, the offer is becoming increasingly dense. It becomes difficult to navigate between all the dimensions and the new denominations. Especially since in addition to special sizes, "made-to-measure" sizes are also available in an already wide offer! Details of each TEMPUR® mattress size are available on our website.

STANDARD MATTRESS SIZES

Mattresses come in these standard sizes in Australia:

  • Single Mattress - 90 x 190cm
  • Mattress 135 x 188
  • Mattress 160 x 200

For a single mattress, the standard dimensions are 90 x 190 cm.

For a 2-person mattress, the standard dimensions remained 140 x 190 cm for a long time.

However, for the past twenty years, both men and women have tended to become taller and taller. To cope with this phenomenon, bedding manufacturers have revised the size of their models upwards. The boom in sales of the 160×200 mattress has gradually raised it to standard sizes.

Even if the 140×190 mattress still remains the majority with 50% of sales, its market share tends to decrease in favour of larger mattress sizes.

LARGE MATTRESS SIZES

While large mattress sizes have until recently had low sales volumes and limited production, these mattress sizes are now seeing strong sales growth.

Two sizes of mattresses have been developed in particular:

·     Mattress 180×200

·     Mattress 200×200

These sizes are not considered standard, but their market share continues to grow.

To obtain bed dimensions of 180×200 or 200×200, it is also possible to combine two single mattresses 90×200 or 100×200 on a single or double bed base of the same size. The advantages are to have greater sleeping independence and to benefit from the comfort of different mattresses for the same bed.

WHAT ARE QUEEN SIZE AND KING SIZE MATTRESSES?

In addition to the dimensions of the mattresses, denominations are sometimes added. This is the case for Queen Size and King Size mattresses. It would even tend to add confusion to the current plethoric offer!

·     Queen size mattress: 160×200

·     King size mattress: 180×200

·     Super King Size or King size XL mattress: 200×200

For more sleeping space, many people turn to the Queen Size bed and its extra 20 centimeters. Its popularity has even raised it to standard sizes. The Queen Size bed no longer rhymes with luxury, it has now become part of the daily life of many people. If the length of the bed remains the same, it is in the width that this bed is larger, ensuring more comfort for sleeping for two.

In terms of style, the large beds give the bedroom a more opulent look and style. It is therefore no coincidence that most hotels rely on Queen and King Size bedding.

Independence is further increased in a King Size bed. Its generous width of 180 cm allows everyone to have their space, to sleep without getting in the way or being bothered. To go even further, the King Size XL bed is the largest size available with its 200×200 cm, comfort is absolute for those who are not afraid of getting lost!

A CATALOG OF SPECIAL DIMENSIONS

As the range of bed sizes has greatly expanded, many mattress sizes are now available. Their availability is often different depending on the manufacturer. However, among the special sizes, there are commonly 10 mattress sizes.

SINGLE-PERSON MATTRESSES

·     Mattress 70×190

·     Mattress 70×200

·     Mattress 80×200

·     Mattress 90×190

·     Mattress 100×200

·     Mattress 120×200

70×190, 70×200, 80×200 and 100×200 mattresses are also used for articulated beds or electric beds.

MATTRESSES FOR 2 PERSONS

·     Mattress 140×200

·     Mattress 160×190

·     Mattress 160×210

·     Mattress 200×200

Special sizes allow you to fit your existing box spring or bed frame without having to replace the entire bedding. They also make it possible to fit into atypical floor spaces. The special mattress dimensions allow you to create a tailor-made sleeping space.

TEMPUR® mattresses are also available in special sizes.

TAILOR-MADE MATTRESSES

In some situations, you will also be able to order a mattress with the dimensions you want. This option is very useful for people with a morphology far from the standards. The dimensions mentioned are less suitable for people over 1.80 meters tall or if you wish to equip a bed with custom-made dimensions. In this case, it will be necessary to contact the brand, but these models are inevitably more expensive with increased delivery times.

BED BASE SIZES

It is essential to choose a bed base that is perfectly suited to bedding because the part of the bed base in the comfort of a bed is important. Like the mattress, the bed base must be chosen with care because for optimal support, the size of the bed base must be adapted.

BASE SIZES ACCORDING TO MATTRESS SIZES

For proper bedding, the size of the box spring should match the size of the mattress. It may seem obvious, but you might be tempted to equip your bed with a box spring slightly larger than your mattress.

BASE AND BED COMPATIBILITY

The size of the box spring should of course also match the size of your bed. There is therefore a bed base size for each mattress size.

For large bedding sizes, it is recommended to choose two-part bed bases in case of difficult access, a narrow staircase for example. Bringing together two box springs to equip a double bed is simple, it will be necessary to equip yourself with connecting feet and sometimes with matching pieces.

Correspondence size of bed and box spring

  • A 90 width bed size will require a 90 width box spring
  • A 140 width bed size will require a 140 width box spring
  • A 160 wide bed size will require a 160 or 2x80 box spring width

TEMPUR® box springs fit most mattresses and bed frames.

ELECTRIC BEDS

In addition to their rest function, electric beds allow you to relax and unwind. The sizes of articulated beds are as numerous as the dimensions of box springs. There are two types of electric bed sizes:

For people sleeping alone, there are sizes of electric bed bases and mattresses that are perfectly suited:

  • 120x190
  • 140x190
  • 120x200
  • 140x200

If you sleep two, two options exist for box springs. However, in any case, equipping yourself with an electric bed will require two mattresses.

Here are the sizes of electric bed bases usually marketed:

Electric double bed base

  • 2x70x190
  • 2x80x200
  • 2x90x200

To ensure a single bed, it will be necessary to add connecting feet and a headboard. The two beds are one, but the independence is preserved.

Single electric bed base

  • 140×190
  • 140x200
  • 160×200
  • 180×200
  • 200×200

TEMPUR® electric beds are available in four sizes.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE SIZE OF YOUR BED?

A BED SIZE THAT MUST ADAPT TO THE PROFILE OF SLEEPERS

Considering the morphology of the sleepers is essential when choosing a bed size. To define the length of the bed, it is necessary to take into consideration the height of the sleeper.

For optimal comfort, the bed should be between 15 and 20 cm longer than the sleeper. A bed with a length of 190 centimetres will be perfectly suitable for a person measuring up to 1.7 to 1.75 meters. A 200-centimetre bed will be adequate for a person up to 1.85 cm tall.

Since a person performs on average 40 to 50 movements per night, the width of the bed is an important criterion. A single adult will be perfectly comfortable with a width of 90 cm while it is recommended that a couple sleep in a bed with a width of 160 cm. For more comfort in the case of a double bed, opting for two twin mattresses ensures more sleeping independence. This is recommended when the two sleepers have a large difference in weight.

THE SIZE OF THE BED MUST ADAPT TO THE AVAILABLE SPACE

When equipping a bedroom, special attention should be paid to bedding. The ideal and universal bed does not exist, so it is essential to take into consideration the needs of the future sleeper when buying. Your choice depends on the equipment you already have, the space available, the sleeping destination (extra, daily, children's room, adults) and of course the budget.

A CHOICE ACCORDING TO THE EXISTING

It is not necessarily useful to change all your bedding. When the comfort of the mattress is still satisfactory, you can only change the box spring or the bed frame. However, the sizes of each element making up the bed must correspond.

A CHOICE OF SIZE ACCORDING TO THE USE OF THE BED

Depending on the size of the bedroom, the morphology of the sleeper, the desired comfort and the use of the bed, the size of the bed and its mattress will change. Indeed, a young child will not have the same needs as a teenager or an adult couple. An apartment and a house will not have the same spaces available. Before thinking about the type of box spring, mattress or even the style of bed frame, it is necessary to think about the dimensions of the bed. Naturally, the larger the bedroom and the larger the budget, the more it will allow you to equip yourself with a large bed. But supporters of large beds will still be able to succumb to the King Size bed, even if the space is limited, subject to emptying your room. It's all about trade-offs and priorities. However, the importance of the size of the bed depends a lot on whether its use is daily or occasional.

DAILY USE

Single bed

For an adult, it is recommended to choose a bed with a minimum width of 90 cm. This width is more comfortable because it allows you to turn around without difficulty. However, if you have the space, opt for a 140 cm bed instead: Nothing is more pleasant than sleeping like a starfish!

Double bed

For a sleep for two, it is recommended to choose a bed with a minimum width of 160 cm so as not to be bothered by the movements of the partner during the night. The movements lead to micro-awakenings which create fatigue during the day. Depending on the space available in the room, you can opt for a larger width of 180 to 200 cm. This width provides exceptional comfort provided you do not feel lost!

EXTRA BEDROOM

If it is an extra bed and the use of the bed remains occasional, limiting yourself to standard sizes has many advantages such as availability and price. However, it can also be interesting to turn to special bed sizes:

  • Small bed sizes optimize the number of beds
  • Large bed sizes prioritize guest comfort while adding character to the bedroom

THE ADVANTAGES OF STANDARD SIZES

Choosing standard bed sizes has advantages over special sizes:

  • Greater availability and choice
  • Shorter delivery times
  • A lower price
  • A larger and cheaper choice of equipment: bedding accessories, box springs, mattresses, bed frame

DIFFERENT BEDDING SIZES INTERNATIONALLY

Bed sizes abroad are often different from what we see in Australia, which complicates the offer and can lead to confusion. Here are the habits of our European neighbours and the trends observed in the United States concerning their purchases of bedding sizes.

BED SIZES IN THE UNITED STATES

When it comes to bedding, Americans think big. Their standards in terms of bed dimensions have been widely distributed to all Anglo-Saxon countries. The bed sizes of Australians and Canadians, for example, are very close to American standards.

Why do these countries favour large beds? It is above all a question of available space and culture. Indeed, these countries benefit from living spaces that are often larger than Europeans, which allows them to equip themselves with larger bedding. In addition, the place of the bedroom in the Anglo-Saxon habitat has evolved. The bedroom has been transformed into a temple of rest. The bed therefore occupies a privileged place with larger dimensions.

This is why Queen and King Size beds are taking over in the United States. It should be noted, however, that their dimensions differ from what is seen here:

  • Double bed: 137×190 cm
  • Queen size: 152×203cm
  • King Size: 193×203cm

BED SIZES IN EUROPE

BED SIZES IN SOUTHERN EUROPE

We note that the dimensions of beds in Italy, Spain and also in Portugal are smaller, even if the standards are also tending to evolve.

For example, the Italians also opt for a bed width of 160 but the length is often limited to 190 cm. In Spain, the traditional 135 x 190 cm bed is replaced by a larger size of 150 x 190 cm. The Portuguese, on the other hand, prefer beds 133 x 183 cm. However, they are turning to bedding sizes that are increasingly close to international sizes.

BED SIZES IN NORTHERN EUROPE

The Scandinavian countries, the Benelux or even Germany prefer separate beds for sleeping alone or in pairs.

The standard bed dimensions in the Benelux and Germany are 180 x 200. The bed usually consists of two mattresses and two box springs of 90 x 200 cm.
